Once

Once there was a little fat baby boy born on June 1st who seemed huge to his older sister when she saw him in the hospital for the first time.

Once there was a little boy, who couldn't play outside in the snow without his mittens. He knew this and once when he couldn't find his mitts, he came up with a genius solution. Running past his mom with his hands on his head Nick shouted over his shoulder, "Look ma! Handmittens!"

Once there was a not so little boy that used to tell his friends when they came over to the house that the stuffed animal tucked in his bed were really his sister's. Bo Bo always looked a little sad when he was pushed aside to make room for a trio of boys to play with transformers or mutant ninja turtles.

Once there was a little boy that created wonderfully complex but of course very useful inventions to help out mankind to do mundane tasks.

Once there was a boy who loved to watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Blues Brothers, Speed, The Mask and Strange Brew over and over and over again.

Once there was a twelve year old that brought his sister orange juice while she was very ill.

Once there was a young teen that used to bring his family to hysterics because he used to dance like Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi in The Blues Brothers.

Once there was a teenager that played Twister until the wee hours of the morning with his sister and friend. That night, Elbows and Knees Twister was instituted.

Once there was a young man that turned the heads of girls as he walked down the street. Six feet tall with an almond face and chocolate eyes...modelling was an option.

Once a brother and sister played Monopoly until two in the morning because neither of us wanted the game to end. We talked about what we were going to buy for each other for our birthdays that were coming up. We laughed, played and came to an understanding about one another. We were friends.

Tears of remembrance came to my eyes when I read this. Most memories are happy. Even though he frequently answered the door with "no one's home!" and the door shut in my face, I think he saw me as another sister, even if a somewhat pesky one. I'll never forget playing "knees and elbows twister" for hours, even though we both denied losing repeatedly, headbutting each other over. And, I knew he accepted me as one of the family when he lent me his prized sunglasses as you and I were going out for a hike. What an interesting young man he would be today!

On a camping trip down in Washington, still cool out at the campground by the ocean. While we set up the camp, he was out in the bushes running from tree to tree in the still dead yellowed grasses. Running with his arm readied on the new plastic bow and arrow that he purchased in the little town we stopped at on our way down.

Grade something, his first year at North Poplar. A plastic bag was found in the weeping willow tree at the end of our driveway, filled with notes to him. The notes were from girls at school who didn't have the nerve to bring it to him face to face. This started jealousy between him and his friend Lance. Lance protecting him from a pack of girls that chased him around the school yard. A fight and a visit to the principals office later,.. things were straightened out and his school year calmed down.
